Updated: Mar 19, 2019

With the new year already underway, and the desire to throw out the old and bring in the new restored, small home renovations and updates are an easy way to achieve the change you want without having to break your budget. The word “renovation” may sound daunting but the process can be as easy as painting an accent wall or changing up your backsplash. Whether you’re a home flipper, a remodeler, or a homeowner looking for a new project, these are the trends to keep an eye on and keep in mind for your next project.

The Bathroom

As one of the most utilized room in your house, your bathroom should be exactly how you like it. With an average of 30-60 minutes per day spent in the bathroom, this should be a room you’re comfortable in and want to spend that time in. Which brings us to our first trend of the year.

Spa inspired bathrooms have been huge the past couple years. With warm tones and inviting design this is the perfect room to lounge in a bathtub and let your worries soak away.

An easy way to achieve this look is with the right tile selection. Creamier toned tile accent walls are very popular and will help set the mood for relaxation. With warmer colored lighting and some robes you’ll feel like you’re in a dedicated relaxation room.

Another key ingredient to the spa inspired bathroom is the all tile shower. Using the same tile as your accent wall, or even the floor, it will help to bring the room together more as well as give you a soothing, warm glow to shower in.

Wood accents are another popular feature in spas and is super easy to incorporate in a bathroom. Lightly colored wooden vanities are making a comeback and are a great way to get a more natural feeling in your bathroom. Incorporating some open shelving that matches your vanity is a nice added touch also and allows for extra storage.

Another trend that’s been gaining popularity is marble-inspired tiles. It has become increasingly more frequent to see a home with a neutral colored bathroom with a bold white and gray marble shower and floor. It’s a lot easier to achieve than anticipated also. With marble inspired wall and floor tiles becoming a hot item, most tile suppliers have options to explore. It tends to stray away from the spa-like feeling but marble is such a classic, timeless statement piece. It’s hard to argue that it doesn’t look incredible with the right wall color and vanity.

The Kitchen

The other room to really focus on for updating is your kitchen. With an average of 60-75 minutes a day spent there it’s important that you absolutely love your kitchen so you stay motivated to utilize your countertops, cabinets, and maybe even the stove and oven a little more often. Some of the new trends are easy enough to do an will help you want to be in your kitchen more.

With white cabinets having dominated the market the past few years, you’ll start to see a change in the tides with grey and black cabinets making a come back. Dark cabinets with a white countertop is the perfect amount of contrast to keep your kitchen intriguing while incorporating another increasingly popular product.

Quartz, which has been on the rise for the past 2 or so years, is the go to option for new countertops. With granite sales dropping, quartz’s striking whites, grays, and blacks are almost as timeless as marble. Almost. The waterfall style island has become a hot style also because of how striking the moment in quartz can be. With nice thick veins and that signature drop, it's a showstopper. With hundreds of different styles and colors available now it’s easy to find just the right stone to match your wants and needs. Despite the popularity of quartz, granite is still the perfect stone for a kitchen that wants some personality. You can't beat the colors and patterns that come with the different granite slabs.

Another trend that would look incredible with black cabinets and a bright white countertop is a bold backsplash. With more people leaning towards black and white kitchens, backsplash is the perfect way to add some flare to any kitchen. Bold patterns and color are gaining popularity and it’s sometimes exactly what your kitchen needs. Just a splash of color can liven a room in seconds.

It doesn’t have to be a painstakingly long task to see a difference in a room and so far the trends for 2019 are reflecting that. Cabinets are easy to paint and can make a drastic difference in a home and just a bold, flavorful wall can wake up any room. Whatever your budget, skill set, or desires, there’s sure to be a way to create your perfect home.
